Lord Byron: Frightened of thunder, fearful of the dark! And yet you have written a tale that sent my blood into icy creeps! Look at her, Shelley! Can you believe that bland and lovely brow conceived of Frankenstein, a monster created from cadavers out of rifled graves? Isn’t it astonishing?

Mary Shelley: I don’t know why you should think so. What do you expect? Such an audience needs something stronger than a pretty little love story. So why shouldn’t I write of monsters?

Happy Birthday, Mary Shelley, and thank you for inventing science fiction.

Once again, I’m saying goodbye to someone who has had an indelible impact in my life. Yet again, I’m saying goodbye to someone who I first learned about from my father, who hasn’t been well. It’s rather like opening up old wounds.

Nonetheless, I want to take a moment to say thank you to Ms. Lauren Bacall. Like so many actresses of classic Hollywood, she was undeniably beautiful. Unlike the rest, she was lit from within with a fire and a confidence the likes of which I have only rarely seen on screen.

The first time I saw her, I fell in love. I wanted to both be more like her and also find a woman like her. She was strong, sensual, funny, progressive, sharp-witted, and magnetic.

Years ago I found an address online that was supposedly one in which you could send Ms. Bacall fanmail and potentially get a signed autograph photo of her in return. For some reason, I kept putting off writing her a letter. Perhaps I honestly did not know what to say to a woman who has inspired and moved me so much. How could I put it in words what it was like for me, an awkward and uncomfortable young girl who preferred classic movies to anything else, to see her electrifying presence on my TV screen?

So I never wrote to her. And now she’s gone. I am so sorry I never took the time to write a note to Lauren Bacall. I still have her movies, and the countless photos and .gifs of her that I have collected over the years. I also have the intense gratitude for her life and work.

So I wish only that Lauren Bacall rest east and peacefully now. She certainly deserves it.

Rest in peace, you incredible woman.

My cemetery’s in Key Biscayne. It’s one of the prettiest in the world. The sky is blue, palm trees, rolling hills. The one in Los Copa’s really shit.

What a pain in the ass you are. And it’s true: you’re not young, you’re not new, and you do make people laugh. And me? I’m still with you because you make me laugh. So you know what I got to do? I got to sell my plot in Key Biscayne so I can get one next to you in that shithole Los Copa so I never miss a laugh.
